In the August issue of Simulation in Healthcare, we offer two articles that address the important and timely topics of racism and implicit bias in the context of simulation education. Vora, Dahlen, Adler, Kessler, Jones, Kimble, and Calhoun provide a discussion of implicit bias training and guidelines for how structural racism and implicit bias might be incorporated into simulation education curricula based on a transformational learning model.Miller, Bryant and Park contributed an editorial that complements and expands on the discussion about race and anti-racism in healthcare simulation. They argue that efforts to address issues surrounding race transcend a focus on educational experiences and scenarios for learners to the healthcare simulation profession, and to healthcare practice more generally.

Simulation provides a safe environment to learn and practice technical and nontechnical skills. We expect that lessons learned will transfer out of our simulation centers to clinical practice and ultimately to better patient care. These authors underscore the potential of simulation to provide a safe place to understand and improve upon the way we perceive and interact with others who may differ from us. One hopes that these lessons also transfer to improved relationships with patients, colleagues, and members of our community.
