Mary Kay Smith

STATEMENT OF INTEREST

It is with great enthusiasm that I submit my name for consideration as a member of the Board of Governance. Having multiple progressive leadership experiences, I am confident in my ability to contribute meaningfully.

I recently chaired the ad hoc Academy Policy and Procedure Committee charged with comprehensive review of existing documents. This work provided valuable insight regarding current processes while illuminating opportunities to strengthen structure, clarity, and strategic alignment. As Past Chair of Accreditation, I guided the transition from committee to council—a complex governance evolution requiring development, review, and approval of policies and standing orders establishing a strong and sustainable infrastructure.

In my role as Executive Director at Michigan State University, I serve on multiple governance bodies, including Chair of the Simulation Steering Committee, Simulation Operations Leadership Chair and Member of the University Committee on Academic Governance.  These experiences have strengthened my capacity for strategic oversight, policy development, consensus-building, and organizational stewardship.

I approach leadership with both vision and disciplined execution. Effective governance requires members who are proactive in anticipating future needs and responsive to emerging challenges. Status quo is not an option. If afforded the opportunity to serve, my contributions will remain firmly grounded in the Academy’s mission and vision. I am committed to fostering a culture of transparency, trust, and pride while collaborating with fellow leaders to advance initiatives that meet the evolving needs of Fellows and elevate the impact of simulation science globally.

Thank you for your consideration. I would be honored to serve.
